Early Childhood Division

 

 

Our Early Childhood Curriculum helps to develop coordination and kinetic awareness, as well as musicality and a love of the arts in our youngest dancers. These classes are designed to stimulate the body and mind of the student as they explore movement and develop their motor skills. From the very littlest dancers in Dance Together to the independence of Creative Movement, Pre Ballet, and Pre Dance, the Early Childhood Division is the perfect place for tiny dancers to begin.

Be your child's dance partner. Young dancers feel the beat and move their feet at this fun dance class designed for young children and their caregivers. Learn basic dance steps and bond with your tiny dancer in a 30-minute class. All are welcome – no previous experience required. A fun and creative introduction to the integration of dance and music, Creative Movement A develops locomotor and basic movement skills, as well as social skills and creativity. While cultivating the movement base needed for all forms of dance, Creative Movement B encourages creative thinking. As the students’ concentration and gross motor skills improve, Creative Movement B encourages body awareness and begins to introduce patterns in both music and movement.

While reinforcing the structured movement activities from previous class levels, Pre Ballet provides a bridge between Creative Movement and the first level of ballet. Students will experience ballet through the development of simple movement sequencing and proper ballet vocabulary.

Designed to foster a love of movement through basic jazz and hip-hop skills, Pre Dance works on basic coordination, locomotor skills, sequencing skills, and dance class etiquette—the basics needed to continue the study of dance.

 

Youth Division

 

 

The Youth Division is where the art of dance is shared and shown to be not only a performance art, but a foundation for developing as a person. Like any form of art, dance requires determination and discipline to master the craft, and we strive to provide students with a firm foundation of quality dance, whether for fun or as a career. The Youth Division includes classes designed to develop coordination, musicality, and kinetic awareness. Classes in the Youth Division are more structured, giving students an opportunity to nurture their love of dance and advance their skill level.

Focusing on balance and body alignment, Ballet 1 A introduces ballet technique at the barre within the structure of a formal ballet class. At this level, students have the physical maturity needed to gain increased flexibility, core strength and body control.

Building on lessons learned in previous levels, Ballet 1 B cultivates correct body alignment, coordination, balance, strength, flexibility and movement articulation. Using longer movement phrases to develop both mental and physical endurance, Ballet 1 B further develops vocabulary and strength for quicker advancement.

An introduction to the Musical Theater genre for children, Broadway Bound 1/2 provides young students the opportunity to explore simple movements for musical theater in both jazz and tap styles.

Full of exercises that emphasize extension, release, weight, momentum, and force, Modern 1 introduces students to elements of a variety of techniques and focuses on movement from the inside out, encouraging use of breath, energy, and connection.

Emphasizing floor work, suspension/release, and momentum, Modern 2 further develops students' understanding of different modern techniques and focuses on moving fully and efficiently. The class playfully explores movement possibilities.

Designed to introduce students to an energetic and exciting style of dance, Jazz 1/2 explores the fundamentals of both lyrical and percussive jazz technique. Students will study the elements of rhythm, isolations, and swing while learning how to express individual style.

Using the student’s expanding vocabulary, Ballet 2 A provides key elements of ballet technique including rhythm and phrasing. Class focuses on strength and performance quality. Emphasis is on class etiquette and use of the core for proper alignment.

Ballet 2 B combines the lessons students have learned throughout their advancement, preparing young dancers for the Advanced Division. Attending class twice per week builds stamina, increases strength, and further advances technique.      

 

 

Advanced Division

 

 

The Advanced Division encourages students to aspire to a high standard of excellence and professionalism. It includes classes in Ballet, Pointe, Hip Hop, Broadway Bound (tap/jazz), and Modern Dance. It is our goal to inspire a passion for dance and encourage students to realize their individual potential through the attention offered by our quality faculty. With an emphasis on the importance of form, musicality, and presence, Ballet 3 is both challenging and rewarding. Classes focus on overall body alignment and awareness as well as proper usage of feet and legs and execution of turnout. Carriage and usage of upper torso and arms are also stressed.

Elevating experienced young dancers into a technically more demanding level, Ballet 4 prepares students for pre-professional training.  Emphasis is placed on coordination, musicality, and technical proficiency as dancers learn how to execute ballet combinations and choreography.

Designed to provide an increased challenge, Ballet 5 builds on the progression in a dancer’s achievements and commitment to dance. This class emphasizes correct postural alignment, principals of turn out, balance, and control while performing complex combinations.

Emphasizing foot-strengthening exercises and alignment, Pre Pointe is a slow, careful and thorough approach that assures a safe and solid foundation allowing the student to be in control and at ease when working en pointe.

Emphasizing longer combination and foot strengthening exercises, Pointe 1 prepares the student for the physical demands of classical repertoire and performance.

As students progress, pointe technique becomes faster and more demanding and focus is on building stamina and skill. Pointe 2 is for advanced students that have completed 2 or more years of pointe work.

At the advanced level, there is a strong emphasis on the refinement of technique. Pointe 3 uses more complex combinations to build increased strength in the feet, turnout in the legs and core strength. At this level, a dancer should be able to execute allegro movements en pointe with sharpness and attack, and adagio movements with softness and fluidity.

Emphasizing the use of the floor for centering and grounding oneself in movement, Modern 3 focuses on the use of breath to bring quality to movement. The class incorporates an eclectic blend of contemporary and post-modern movement for a style that is both quirky and organic.

Continuing with exploration in movement, Modern 4 delves further into complex rhythm and movement elements such as effort, shape, time and space. Students will experience more opportunities for improvisation and exploration of personal style in this class.

Focusing on classical repertoire from the great ballets, Pointe Variations gives students the appreciation and history of ballet classics. Strong technical training, research and application will be the main concentration throughout.

Broadway Bound 3/4 | 1 hour & 15 minutes per week

Using contemporary and classic music from the Musical Theater genre, Broadway Bound 3/4 covers more advanced movements in tap and jazz techniques introduced in previous levels. Students who wish to advance their level of Musical Theater performance can take this fun and show stopping class.

 

 

Recreational Classes

 

 

Northern Plains Dance's recreational classes offer quality training in a variety of dance styles for beginner-intermediate teens and adults. Just because you didn't study dance as a young child - or stopped before you realized your full potential - it is never too late to experience the joy of dance. Increasing creativity, fitness and longevity, Prime Movement integrates an eclectic variety of movement styles, focused mainly in Modern dance. This class provides a multitude of movement possibilities for the human body and allows each dancer to connect with the dance space, music and fellow dancers.

Lyrical Jazz | 1 hour & 15 minutes per week

A dance form that combines techniques of ballet, modern, and jazz, Lyrical Jazz introduces students to the partnership of song and movement. Focusing on inspiration and expression, dancers will develop strength, control, and flexibility while investing in the emotional drive of song lyrics.

Northern Plains Dance also offers Wedding Dance Workshops throughout the year for adults. Workshops are 4 weeks long and $45 per person.

Covering Waltz, Swing, Salsa, and Two Step, this course will get you ready to cut a rug during wedding season. Individuals and couples are welcome.
